European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
