Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
