Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
